Laughing with Myself: Finding Healing and Humor in Sobriety
Jul 28, 2021I have a question: When was the last time you laughed with your Self?
Ya’ll, I laugh with my Self all the time! Why?
Firstly, because I can. LOL! (Pun intended). Secondly, because I understand and fully accept my quirkiness. I’m animated, make up my own vocabulary to express my Self, and will choose laughter as a gateway to witty wonderment.
Laughter as Liberation: My LOL Moment
For example, I laughed hysterically when I wrote the poem Laugh Out Loud. While sharing a situation most people wouldn’t dare talk about with strangers, I took the leap and published an occasion I passed gas at an inopportune time! You can relive the amusing memory with me via my YouTube video. If nothing else, you’ll laugh at my hysterical laughter or enjoy the bloopers!
Rule #62: Don’t Take Yourself So Seriously
Laughing with rather than at my Self also keeps me from lending personal criticisms for lighthearted mistakes, This is not an original thought or concept — 12-step programs introduce Rule #62 to reassure newcomers and seasoned individuals in recovery not to take ourselves so seriously.
» Side note —This relatable rule applies to everyone in- and outside the rooms of recovery!
Let me reassure you, we’ve all had moments of hushed amusement.
Let Laughter Be Your Liaison
Like you, I wonder if others share or can identify with my unconventional imaginings. Turns out, they do. Some folks refrain from sharing their tickled thoughts in fear of how others may respond. To lighten the fear of fathomed embarrassment, let me encourage you on your joyous journey with confirmation that laughter serves as our larger than life liaison.
I absolutely LOVE it when a hard laugh is shared with friends, family, and anyone that may cross my path. Why not lift my Self and others with laughter?! It’s free therapy for the soul.
For this, I am grateful.
So … How often do you laugh with your Self?
Until next time ... Joyous Journey.
