Room 118: A Poetic Reflection on Contentment and Self-Love

Jan 28, 2022

Twelve years ago, on January 7th, I wrote a poem dedicated to my definition of contentment and self-love.

At the time it was written, my living situation appeared bleak on the outside. The obstacles I encountered subjected me to doubt, discouragement, and internal discord — all while approaching three years of sobriety. With my finances in question and no definitive place to call “home,” I chose to treat myself to a room at a local motel in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“Spiritual Retreat” will be included in the second edition of Quiet Accumulation: Poetry of Spiritual Promise.

Creating Peace in the Midst of Uncertainty

In spite of my circumstances, I stayed in Room 118 accompanied with a positive outlook on life — a garment bag filled with business attire for prospective interviews, several pens, and stacks of stacks of journals past and present. It was at this moment I vowed to publish a poetry book someday.

Embracing tranquility at the Red Roof Inn, Room 118.

As I reflected on my life, I smiled with amusement. Yep, I was peaceful and present. That night, nothing could detract my newfound tranquility. So, I decided to record it with pen and paper. An experience forever etched in time.

For this, I am grateful.

Until next time ... Joyous Journey.
