Books, Plants, and Solitude: My Not-So-Secret Great Escapes

Feb 04, 2022

Not so secretly, I am a huge fan of books and plants. Why?

Solitude.

Books readily remove me from disruptive or unexpected life experiences. They also have the uncanny capability of introducing me to new understandings such as introspection, history, and personal development. In the quiet moments, they speak by creating a world of imagination, intrigue, and possibility. When the world is loud, literature brings tranquility.

Here's a peek at my bookshelf and beloved desk that's seen countless pieces of literature.

As my declared babies, plants allow me the opportunity to reflect upon and contribute to growth — literally and figuratively. In their own subtle way, they promote prosperity and abundance. Though my home is filled with greenery, I don’t know their formal names or species. That’s right, I just nurture them and let them cater and cultivate me discretely, affectionately, and peacefully.

Solitude is simple and sweet.

When practiced with purpose, solitude serves as a sound sidekick. Moments, hours, or even days of solitude contribute to my inner peace. Though, to some extent it inherits the theme of withdrawal, it is not to be confused with its first cousin — isolation. Constructive seclusion is attainable through a variety of avenues and thrives in other areas such as exploration through travel (another personal favorite) and sitting by a lake at the park. No, this favored affair did not happen overnight. I gradually learned to fully embrace its sparkle in sobriety. Today, I am afforded the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy solitude’s company and spiritual quietness.

For this, I am grateful.

So, what are your not-so-secret great escapes?

Until next time ... Joyous Journey.
