How Well Do You Embrace Unexpected Change? A Reflection on Transition in Recovery
May 23, 2022I have a question: How well do you welcome unexpected change when it arrives?
Like most, I tend to plan days, weeks, and sometimes months in advance. As of late, I have been called to plan the upcoming years with more diligence and direction. Could it be I’m getting older and desire a fulfillment in the latter years of my life?
Maybe.
One Day at a Time ...
The mentality and mantra of “one day at a time” has guided my foresight for the past fifteen years. How? My recovery journey introduced me to the concept of not planning so far ahead into the future — hence, I may ignore the solace and simplicities of the present. Though it took some time, today I am taking hold of the realization that there is a healthy balance in exploring both the present and the hopeful prosperities of the unforeseen future.
Reflecting in the car and realizing (again) ... Accepting change is uncomfortable yet necessary.
Is this unceremonious realization uncomfortable? Sure. However, it appears to be more of a probing excitement of what is to come. Not only is my character in this play in transition but so is the audience. The curtain has closed, the intermission has begun, and the stagehands are switching out the props as I change in the dressing room.
The Show Must Go On
Though I do not have time to rehearse my lines, the show must go on — and rather than deflect the new scenery with diffidence, I choose to receive applause from its anticipated favor. Completing the play with decorated spontaneity and thoughtful intention is a privilege.
For this, I am grateful.
Today, I encourage you to embrace timely transition and unforeseen transformation.
Until next time ... Joyous Journey.
